HARRISBURG — Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) joined his colleagues in approving a $42.8 billion Fiscal Year 2022-23 state budget on Thursday. He issued the following statement in response:
“This budget is a win-win for Pennsylvanians. We are funding people not government. We are paying our bills, building the Rainy Day Fund and returning money to the taxpayers through tax cuts and investments. Just like the Commonwealth’s families, we are making sure our house is in order and preparing for the future. I’m proud to support this plan.
“Educating our children is a key to our future. This budget increases the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program by $125 million so that more children and their parents have a choice when finding the right educational fit. No child should be prevented from accessing a quality education that best addresses their needs.
“In addition, we are shoring up our election systems to bring integrity. We took the first step on two election-related constitutional amendments. One proposed amendment would require identification be shown by voters at the polls, and the other would require independent election audits by Auditor General. For voters to see the questions on ballots, the measures must be approved by the General Assembly next session.
“Finally, this budget cuts the nation’s second highest Corporate Net Income (CNI) Tax by 1% this year and 0.5% each year until we reach 4.99%. This job-crushing tax discourages businesses from locating in the Commonwealth. We should be welcoming new businesses and removing roadblocks to grow the economy. This is one way to do that.”
