HARRISBURG – Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) today reminded vehicle owners that if their license plate is difficult to read, a replacement plate is available for free. To help facilitate the process to turn in the illegible plate for a new one, Mako is teaming up with the Lehigh County Sheriff’s Office for an event on Tuesday, May 9.
The event will be held at Kolapechka Park,
4075 Coffeetown Road, Coplay (North Whitehall Township), from 4-7 p.m. Pre-registration is required by Monday, May 8, by calling 610-760-9805 or by emailing
jnestor@pahousegop.com.
“License plates can become damaged due to weather and age, which results in the letters and numbers becoming difficult to read,” Mako said. “PennDOT will replace these illegible license plates for free but some find the process cumbersome. This event will help simplify the process for vehicle owners.”
If the plate is determined to be illegible, paperwork will be completed for no fee. A new standard replacement plate should arrive in a few weeks to the vehicle owner’s home address.
According to PennDOT, a registration plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.
In addition, the event will feature CarFit, an educational program for seniors to learn how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. To register for CarFit, please contact Renee Fritzinger at
rfritzinger@hsnetwork.org or 610-554-3319.
The 183rd House District includes Lowhill and North Whitehall townships and Slatington Borough in Lehigh County. It also consists of Allen, East Allen, Lehigh and Moore (part) townships, and Bath, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport boroughs in Northampton County.
