HARRISBURG – The House today approved legislation authored by Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) to update the vehicle code to allow motorcyclists to wear headphones or helmets with built-in headphone capabilities.
“State law needs modernized to better reflect the times,” Mako said. “With the widespread usage of wireless headsets, earbuds and earphones and Bluetooth communication built into helmets, we should not criminalize those who use the most up-to-date products that are widely accepted by the motorcycling community. In addition, I argue this is a safety issue. Instead of having to look down at navigational information, motorcyclists will be able to hear it in their ears.”
House Bill 538 allows motorcycle operators to wear or use one or more headphones, earphones or protective headgear with the same capabilities. The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
The 183rd District includes Lowhill and North Whitehall townships and Slatington Borough in Lehigh County. It also consists of Allen, East Allen, Lehigh and Moore (part) townships, and Bath, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport boroughs in Northampton County.
